A Brief History of Amersham Bowls Club

Sycamore Bowls Club was founded in Amersham in 1934 and moved to its present site at Hervines Park, Amersham in 1965 when it became Amersham Bowls Club. The first president was H. J. Renshaw whose son Norman was a member of the club until his sad death earlier this year. Norman’s widow Muriel (also a bowler) is the daughter of the first treasurer, T. Collins.

In 1964 Mrs Isobel Pike instigated the idea of a ladies club and the Ladies Section was formed when the men’s club moved to Hervines Park in 1965. Bowling commenced on May 4th 1965 with a membership of 35 men and 20 ladies. The first ladies match was played on July 22nd against Potten End. The ladies continue to enjoy a number of friendly matches throughout the season and compete in county competitions. In the past, several ladies have held county badges and at present there are three county players in the club. There has been one county president from Amersham. namely Mrs Catherine Brown, 1976-77.

The club became fully mixed in 2001 and now has a membership of 108 which includes 50 ladies.

Although the green is council owned it is now maintained by a team of members under the guidance of the green manager, Mrs Beryl Baker. This has proved successful and the club now enjoys good bowling in pleasant surroundings.
